| Teacup Poodle Info |
| What is a Teacup? A Teacup poodle is generally considered weighing 4 pounds or less and usually 8 inches or less at the shoulders. They are also sometimes called Pocket Poodles or Peanut Poodles. Are Teacups Just "Runts"? Some breeders will sell a "runt" as a Teacup, but a 3 lb. dog coming from 8 lb. parents is not a Teacup. True Teacups have been bred for their tiny stature for generations. Do Teacups Have More Health Problems? Teacups are generally as healthy as any other poodle. The difference is that if they do have an injury or illness, the treatment may be more difficult and expensive because of their size. Just as babies and children are more vulnerable to some injuries and illnesses than adults because they are smaller, the same is true of Teacups. However, a Teacup that has proper nutrition and health care and a safe environment can expect the same - or longer - life span as a larger poodle, often 15 years or more. Why Do Teacups Cost More? Teacups are particularly difficult and expensive to breed. Purchasing the breeding stock (parents) of true Teacups typically costs $2000-5000 each. Then, we wait for a year or two before they can be bred, without any assurance that they will be able to breed until we see a puppy. Teacups have a much higher risk of needing a C-section ($1000 or more). The C-section also carries a higher risk of the mother and/or puppies dying. And even if the mother survives the surgery, she may be unable to breed again afterwards. Furthermore, Teacup puppies are especially fragile, weighing 2 to 4 ounces at birth, and require more care than larger puppies. They must be monitored around the clock for weeks, may need specialized feeding for a short time after being weaned and must stay with us longer than larger puppies. Also, true Teacup moms have fewer puppies per litter. So, while we spend extra time and money on them, we may only have one or two puppies from a Teacup litter. Finally, Teacups have become very popular and are in high demand, but they are not easy to produce, so demand exceeds supply. Why Are Teacups So Popular? Great things come in small packages. In addition to the wonderful qualities common to all poodles, there are several reasons so many people are choosing Teacups. They are excellent pets for people with limited space, such as an apartment, or those who don't have a yard. They travel easily in the car and they can be taken on airplanes in the main cabin rather than riding in the cargo area. Teacups are also great companions for seniors or those with physical disabilities who cannot lift a larger dog. Also, as Poodles are highly intelligent, Teacups can be trained for indoor litter boxes or potty pads, eliminating the need to be taken out to go potty. But really, it all comes down to the fact that nothing beats having a Teacup Poodle laying in your lap and looking up at you with those adoring eyes. You'll never be the same. |
